Wind2 Granted Planning Permission for Woolfords Wind Farm, South Lanarkshire

The team behind Woolfords Wind Farm project can confirm that planning permission was granted by the South Lanarkshire Council on 30 May 2025.

Woolfords Wind Farm

Upon completion, the Woolfords Wind Farm, which is located 1.6km to the West of the village of Woolfords, near West Calder, will feature three wind turbines. The turbines will be up to 180m to tip with an installed capacity of approximately 20MW, capable of generating around 70,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity annually. This is sufficient to meet the energy needs of approximately 19,500[1] homes each year.

During the design and development of the Woolfords Wind Farm, Wind2 hosted a public exhibition on November 18, 2021, at Tarbrax Village Hall, where the proposed plans were presented to the local community. With over 70 attendees, the feedback received was generally positive, and no objections were submitted to the Planning Department.

Community Benefit

The project management team collaborated closely with the local community to ensure that the community benefit fund will make a tangible difference for residents near the Woolfords Wind Farm project. The annual fund, at £5,000 per MW, will potentially reach £100,000 per annum. The fund will provide discounts on electricity bills to near neighbours, as well as support WATIF (the Woolfords, Auchengray and Tarbrax Improvement Foundation) and South Lanarkshire’s Renewable Energy Fund.

Edinburgh based, Ewan Eley, Wind2 Project Manager, commented, “I am excited to see Woolfords progress toward construction over the coming years. The project has faced complexities, including Radar Mitigation and planned grid connection reinforcements, but has had support from local landowner, Hamilton Farms Ltd, who have remained determined throughout.”

Landowner and farmers at Woolfords, The Hamilton’s commented, “The progress Wind2 have made is fantastic, where others have failed, Wind2 have been committed and determined to get to this stage. They have engaged with us throughout, as well as the local community who will also benefit greatly from the project. We now look forward to the construction of the wind farm in the coming years”

The Build

It is anticipated that Woolfords Wind Farm will contribute to the UK Government’s ambition of achieving Clean Power for Great Britain by 2030 and to the Scottish government's ambitious targets of realising 20GW of onshore wind by the same date.

Wind2’s Development Director, Fraser Mackenzie, concluded, “This project is another testament to Scotland’s progress towards its renewable energy targets. Ewan and his team have worked hard to bring the project to this stage, and we are all excited to witness the next steps in its construction and commissioning.”
